چکیده

Recent observations indicate that fully convective stars can effectively build magnetic fields without the aid of a tachocline of shear, that those fields can possess large-scale components, and that they may sense the effects of rotation. Motivated by these puzzles, we present global threedimensional simulations of convection and dynamo action in the interiors of fully convective Mdwarfs of 0.3 solar masses. We use the Anelastic Spherical Harmonic (ASH) code, adopting a spherical computational domain that extends from 0.08-0.96 times the overall stellar radius. We find that such fully convective stars can generate magnetic fields of several kG strength, roughly in equipartition with the convective flows. Differential rotation is established in hydrodynamic progenitor calculations, but essentially eliminated in MHD simulations because of strong Maxwell stresses exerted by the magnetic fields. Despite the absence of interior angular velocity contrasts, the magnetic fields possess strong mean (axisymmetric) components, which we attribute partly to the very strong influence of rotation upon the slowly overturning flows.

Magnetic Field Generation in Fully Convective Rotating Spheres

Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of fully convective, rotating spheres with volume heating near the center and cooling at the surface are presented. The dynamo-generated magnetic field saturates at equipartition field strength near the surface. In the interior, the field is dominated by small-scale structures, but outside the sphere by the global scale. Azimuthal averages of the field reveal a l...

The rotation of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs

The evolution of angular momentum is a key to our understanding of star formation and stellar evolution. The rotational evolution of solar-mass stars is mostly controlled by magnetic interaction with the circumstellar disc and angular momentum loss through stellar winds. Major differences in the internal structure of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs – they are believed to be fully convectiv...

Rotation and variability of young very low mass objects

Variability studies are an important tool to investigate key properties of stars and brown dwarfs. From photometric monitoring we are able to obtain information about rotation and magnetic activity, which are expected to change in the mass range below 0.3 solar masses, since these fully convective objects cannot host a solar-type dynamo. On the other hand, spectroscopic variability information ...

On the rotational evolution of solar- and late-type stars, its magnetic origins, and the possibility of stellar gyrochronology

We propose a simple interpretation of the rotation period data for solarand late-type stars. The open cluster and Mt. Wilson star observations suggest that rotating stars lie primarily on two sequences, initially called I and C. Some stars lie in the intervening gap. These sequences, and the fractional numbers of stars on each sequence evolve systematically with cluster age, enabling us to cons...

Rotational Evolution of Very Low Mass Objects and Brown Dwarfs

The regulation of angular momentum is one of the key processes for our understanding of stellar evolution. The rotational evolution of solar-mass stars is mainly determined by the magnetic interaction with their circumstellar disk and angular momentum loss through stellar winds, and In contrast to solar-mass stars, very low mass (VLM) objects and brown dwarfs are believed to be fully convective...
